AGCO is a $7B global leader in the design, manufacturing, and distribution of a full line of agricultural equipment and services, and enables more productive farming for globally-dispersed customers.

Internal engineers tested operations across 3,000+ dealers and distributors in 150+ countries and found that shop floor operators took longer than expected to complete tasks. By providing operators with line-of-sight, hands-free instructions, they were better able to handle highly-complex manufacturing environments and work more efficiently—and safely.

Challenge

Improve operations with AI built for industrial

After conducting internal tests, the engineers at AGCO noticed many shop floor operators took longer than expected to perform their critical tasks. The team found that work instructions were not always readily available to the operators—causing a delay in task completion.

To prevent quality issues, real-time data input and timely information were necessary, not optional. The added time operators needed to walk back and forth between computer terminals to consult instructions added up to an hour of time to each day—wasting resources and jeopardizing product quality.

Face-to-face with the challenge, the AGCO team used SymphonyAI’s platform to expedite processes, lessen the workload for operators, and ensure the quality of each shop’s output going forward.

Solutions

The brand set out to transform operations with industrial AI

AGCO initially experimented with tablets for assembly instructions. The hardware proved ineffective because it was easy to misplace, or worse—it dropped to the ground from a 12-foot tractor.

By introducing wearables into the manufacturing process with Google Glass, the team positioned itself to then implement the Proceedix Connected Worker platform and overcome its challenges.

The approach centered on three key steps.

Step 1

Adopt Google Glass

After experimenting with multiple brands of smart glasses, the team chose Google’s hardware. The team aimed to streamline safety audits and monitor hand positioning during climbing, assembling, and material handling, and eliminate excessive walking between information terminals by workers.

“All seven wastes of Lean manufacturing—Transport, Inventory, Motion, Waiting, Over-Processing, Overproduction, and Defects—have ultimately become metrics for AGCO as we continue to audit our success and improve our business cases.”

Step 2

Integrate AI to transform operations

With Google Glass in place, the AGCO team took a thoughtful, strategic approach to further transform its operations. In partnership with SymphonyAI, the teams created a plan to move forward.

Step 3

Introduce the Proceedix Connected Worker API

The team wanted to empower each of its inspectors to complete tasks more efficiently and effectively. The Connected Worker platform seamlessly integrated with Google Glass, directing each operator down the right path.

In highly-complex operations, quick access to information matters. With the right support, operators have the confidence to act swiftly.

AGCO enhanced process time and operator efficiency

By rolling out the Proceedix Connected Worker platform, AGCO achieved a 35% decrease in process time by providing operators with work instructions directly in their line of sight. By enabling hands-free work, operators could consult information and complete tasks simultaneously. Eliminating back and forth between computer terminals made the day-to-day less tedious for operators.

Reduced the operator learning curve duration by 50%

The learning curve duration has dropped a staggering 50% by sending instructions directly to operators when they need them through the Proceedix integration API. With easy-to-access instructions at their fingertips, operators are empowered to act swiftly and complete their tasks effectively.

Recognized as an exceptional industrial leader

In 2023, six global manufacturers were awarded and celebrated for dramatic improvements in process efficiency, quality, and cost savings supported by SymphonyAI’s industrial applications. AGCO was recognized as an exceptional industrial leader for their digital transformation process.

The Future

AGCO continues to lead the way for AI

“We have been working closely with SymphonyAI since 2014 to implement informed reality technology in our operations. Using a wearable device, such as Glass assisted reality, keeps users in their current environment but puts critical information directly in their line of sight.”
